Educational Websites

I had a few parents ask about some websites they could take their kids to.  The first grade team put together a list of site on a symbaloo to use as school and for you to use at home!

Here is how you find our symbaloo:

1)  Go to the Union Valley website.

2) Click on students from the top tabs.
3) Click on class links from the iPad choices.
4) Find 1st grade on the right hand side
5) The symbaloo is on the half down the page under the email addresses and blogs.
On the symbaloo everything is organized by subject area.

Have fun!!

Readers Theater

Thanks to everyone who came out and watched our readers theater last Friday.  I finally got the video all put together.  They are in the same order that we performed them I think!

The kids are a little hard to hear, and there is noise between the clips, so it might be a little loud when the noise comes on!

Enjoy and share with any friends and family you would like!

Happy Halloween!!

I was a little worried about how the day was going to go with the rain this morning and it being Halloween.  HOWEVER...we had a GREAT day!  We had so much fun with our center rotations, a birthday party, a little just dance, and topped it all off with Witches Brew and a movie!  This morning we had a little fun taking pictures before the parade.  Here are some of my favorites!

The sweetest little girls that I get to spend all day with!

And an awesome group of little boys!

The green slime ghost and ghost buster provided quite a few laughs this morning.

Its a blurry - but he was showing me how the hulk flies through the air to get people :)

We won't have to worry about crime today!

And you always need a few fairies and a cheer leader in the class.

Hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween!!

Dillon Nature Center Walk

This week we walked over to Dillon Nature Center to learn about spiders.  The kids learned lots of new things and got to see some spiders in action.

This is a barn spider that makes an orb web (round and round).   There is a grasshopper stuck in her web.

This is a funnel web spider (her web is on the ground and looks like a kitchen funnel).  She has a stink bug in her web.

These spiders make very different webs and capture their prey very differently.  Ask your kids about the different webs.  They can also tell you about spiders that don't make webs, and spider babies!

Candy Corn Everywhere!!

Today we had an exciting day filled with CANDY CORN!!

We started the morning making CVC words to look like candy corn (I forgot to take pictures of that!!)

Then we did a little candy corn and candy pumpkin nonstandard measuring.

Then we we did a little bit of number recognition that looked like candy corn.

Last they had to come up with combinations of candy corn and candy corn pumpkins for Jerrick to eat if he could only have 10 pieces of candy.  On Monday we will look at all the ways they came up with and which ones are turn around problems (the commutative property of addition).

We had so much fun except for the fact that I wouldn't let them eat the candy that every one touched and put on the floor!!

Happy LONG weekend!

Look who showed up today!

Today while I was at jury duty look who showed up in our classroom!

We will let it go free tomorrow and hopefully I will be able to tell the kids if Black and Yellow is a boy or girl butterfly!

Butterflies

This last week we have been learning about the life cycles of butterflies.  We looked at some of the special things about Monarch butterflies.  Did you know that a Monarch lays it eggs on milkweed plants because that's what the the caterpillars will eat.  And when a caterpillar gets ready to make their chrysalis they hang upside down in a "J" shape!

Here is our caterpillar, that we named Black and Yellow, getting ready to make its chrysalis.

It was another great week of learning in 1st grade.  Next week we will start spelling.  The first test will be on Friday Sep. 27th.   Grades will not be recorded for report cards until the second 9 weeks of school.

Welcome To Our Blog!

Welcome friend and family of this years Gray's Go Getters!!  We've only been in school for 11 days but we have done some super exciting things already.

We went to the fair.

And checked out all the constructions vehicles that have been used at U.V.

I am having such a great time working with this group of kids.  I hope they are having as good a time as I am.  Check back often for updates and information!
